What are Wellness Squads?
The first project of social consciousness connected with the International Coalition of College Philanthropists (ICCP) is "The Wellness Squad," which will be created in each city in which a campus chapter of ICCP has been founded. The idea is based on the concept that human beings are wired for narrative, therefore they will respond to conversation and narrative more positively than almost any other stimulus (except for music). Hospital patients suffer from isolation, with never enough visitors or diversion from their pain. The concept of the ICCP's Wellness Squads is to have a high school club/group collaborate with the neighborhood hospital nearest to the high school. An ICCP college student or college chapter committee will act as liaisons between the high school visiting group and the Program Director at the neighborhood hospital. The ICCP liaison will set up a visitation schedule for the students on a weekly basis. The students can spend time in conversation with the patients or play music for them. The high school students may want to choose a local veterans' hospital, where such comradery would certainly be welcomed.
The high school that is the first to create such a socially conscious squad of students will be the flagship school for the ICCP's community project nationwide.
The students will be exposed to the medical health professions and the concepts of social work and counseling as they spend an hour each week visiting patients in need of some conversation and kindness. Students will accrue community service hours (which the ICCP Chapter President would sign off on), and will hold executive positions in their high school's chapter of ICCP's Wellness Squad--all things that are important for their growth as young leaders in the community, and for making them respected and desirable college applicants (and graduate school applicants).
" If you want to see positive change in this world, watch this collegiate coalition as they JOIN THE EVOLUTION and Discover their Power in Social Action. "
